OUR PROCESS & MATERIALS

What goes into
your concrete.

From the first piece of old concrete removed to the final border, here is how we approach the work.

Spec-32 road base
4in.
Typical slab thickness
4in.
Typical reinforcement
10M @ 24 in. O.C.
Concrete strength
32MPa

Our typical residential starting point. Ground conditions, vehicle loads, and the project design determine the final thickness and reinforcement.

01Remove the old concrete

Replacing an existing surface? We can break up and remove the old concrete using a skid steer, mini skid steer, and handheld jackhammer, choosing the equipment to suit the access.

02Make room for the full build-up

For our typical 4-inch slab over a 4-inch base, we excavate to provide 8 inches of space below the planned finished surface. Unsuitable ground or heavier loads may require deeper preparation or a thicker slab.

03Wide driveways. Tight spaces.

We work on large driveways and on narrow walkways between houses, beneath decks, and in other areas with limited access.

We plan the equipment and material handling around the space available. Send photos of the route into your yard so we can assess the approach.

04Place, level & compact the base

We use Spec-32 road base: a graded blend of sand, fine particles, and larger stone that packs together under compaction.

Our typical build includes 4 inches of compacted base. We spread and level the material, then use a plate compactor to create a firm, even foundation.

05Set the drainage

We establish a slope that directs surface water away from the house, garage, and other structures, while working with the property’s existing grades and drainage routes.

06Reinforce for the project

We offer 10M steel or 10M fibreglass (GFRP) reinforcement, with a typical layout of 24 inches on centre — measured from the centre of one bar to the next.

15M bars and closer spacing, such as 16 inches on centre, can be specified on request where appropriate. Material, bar size, spacing, and concrete cover are selected together for the project; steel and GFRP have different design properties.

07Connect where the design calls for it

Where a connection is appropriate, we drill into sound existing concrete and install dowels or reinforcing bars to connect the new work.

Connections to existing slabs or concrete walls are assessed individually. Where independent movement is needed, an isolation joint is the appropriate detail.

08Use 32 MPa concrete

We use 32 MPa concrete for driveways and walkways. For Saskatchewan’s freeze–thaw conditions, air entrainment, mix proportions, finishing, and curing also matter.

Expecting heavy trucks, RVs, or equipment? Tell us before the quote so the slab and base can be planned for those loads.

09Add a broom finish

A broom finish creates a textured surface for better traction underfoot than a smooth finish. Snow and ice still need to be managed in winter.

10Plan the joints

We form control joints in the fresh concrete with a groover, or saw-cut them after finishing, depending on the job. The layout helps manage shrinkage cracking; it does not make concrete crack-proof.

11Finish the edges your way

A smooth, decorative border is our default finish. Prefer the broom texture carried to the edge without a contrasting border? We can plan that with you before the pour.

MORE THAN THE FINAL POUR

The groundwork
gets our attention, too.

We consider the existing ground, excavation, base material, compaction, and drainage before the pour. Reinforcement, slab thickness, and joint layout are confirmed for the particular project.
