Concrete Driveway planning guide

A SASKATOON HOMEOWNER’S GUIDE

Plan a concrete driveway
around the whole site.

A useful driveway quote starts before the finish is chosen. Access, drainage, demolition, base preparation, vehicle use, and transitions all shape the scope.

DEFINE THE SCOPE

Removal, preparation and finish.

01 / START WITH THE JOB

New driveway or replacement?

A new build and a replacement can look similar when finished, but the work leading up to the pour may differ. For a replacement, identify what must be removed, where material can be loaded, and whether nearby landscaping, steps, curbs, or garage slabs need protection.

Measure the approximate length and width, note narrow sections, and describe the vehicles that will use the driveway. A sketch and several wide photos are more useful than one close-up.

Cost is site-specific.

Area matters, but it is only one input. Demolition, disposal, access, excavation, base work, reinforcement, thickness, finish, edges, and connections can all change the scope. SaskTerrain provides a project-specific quote rather than publishing a made-up square-foot price.

02 / READ THE SITE

Plan the water and the transitions.

Walk the route from the street or lane to the garage. Note doors, downspouts, low areas, utility covers, adjoining walks, and where snow is normally stored. The finished surface must work with the property’s drainage plan and connect sensibly to existing elevations.

  • Photograph the driveway from both ends and include the garage threshold.
  • Mark areas where water collects or crosses the proposed surface.
  • Identify what must remain usable during the work.
  • Share known underground services and arrange required utility locates before excavation.

03 / COMPARE THE SAME SCOPE

Ask what is included.

A useful comparison is not just the total. Ask each contractor to describe removal and disposal, excavation, base preparation, reinforcement, concrete thickness for the intended use, finish, joints, edges, transitions, cleanup, and the assumptions behind the quote.

If two proposals describe different preparation or exclude different parts of the job, their totals are not directly comparable. Clarify allowances and exclusions before choosing.

04 / PLAN AROUND THE WORK

Keep access practical.

Discuss the expected sequence and the contractor’s site-specific guidance for foot traffic and vehicles. Weather and site conditions can change a schedule. Plan alternate parking, deliveries, waste collection, and access to the house or garage before work begins.

Fresh concrete needs protection while it gains strength. Follow the instructions given for your mix, thickness, weather, and intended use rather than a generic online deadline.

05 / AFTER THE POUR

Use care through Saskatoon winters.

Keep drainage paths open and remove snow before repeated traffic packs it down. Use tools that will not gouge the surface. Before applying any de-icer, confirm that it is suitable for the concrete’s age and condition and follow the product label and contractor guidance.

Notice changes early. A photo of a joint, edge, or drainage concern gives the contractor more context than a general description.

READY TO DISCUSS THE SITE?

Send photos and approximate dimensions.

Include the address, how the driveway will be used, and what is there now. SaskTerrain can then discuss a site-specific scope.
